ANSA) - Rome, June 29 - European financial markets were severely shaken Monday morning as the Greece government closed banks for a week and imposed capital controls as it prepared for a vote on aid and reforms that would also be a referendum on the country's future in the eurozone.
A 60-euro-limit was imposed on cash withdrawals from ATMs to stem a capital flight from the country after Premier Alexis Tsipras announced a referendum on the latest reforms-and-aid offer, adding he would endorse a 'no' vote.
Tsipras on Friday rejected the latest proposals by creditors including the European Central Bank (ECB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU).
Two surveys released last week suggested that the majority of Greeks want to continue to use the single currency and would prefer a agreement with the European partners of the country rather than a break.
But those were conducted before Tsipras announced Sunday's referendum on the proposed package from creditors.
European financial markets were falling Monday morning over concerns about the future of the single-currency if Greece were to default and leave the eurozone.
